Downtown you will encounter the Fort Heritage Precinct nestled on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River.

Downtown you will encounter the Fort Heritage Precinct nestled on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River showcasing the history of the North West Mounted Police, Alberta’s Provincial Gaol (jail), and early settlers in the area through a village of historic buildings.

The Fort Heritage Precinct is also a great outdoor recreation area where you can enjoy events and festivals, feed the City’s flock of sheep, toboggan down the river valley hills, skate under sparkling winter lights, and enjoy beautiful trails year-round. Unique shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the Precinct in the City’s historic downtown. The Fort Heritage Precinct is open to visitors Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm from May long weekend to September long weekend, and Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm from September long weekend to May long weekend.

The Alberta Lottery Fund Art Gallery at the Dow Centennial Centre hosts month-long art shows and exhibits displaying the work of visual artists and craft artisans. The Shell Theatre offers a variety of performances to delight audiences. For indoor recreation, the Dow Centennial Centre has a gymnasium, ice arena, soccer field, running track and fitness centre. And don’t forget to make a splash in the swimming pool over at Harbour Pool.

Watch for the sheep that graze the parks around the Fort Heritage Precinct Thursdays-Sundays and holidays. Shop at the Farmers’ Market with over 40 vendors downtown Thursdays from mid-June to mid-September, as well as Saturdays in July and August. Other events in the City include the Legacy Park Family Festival (and arrival of the sheep!) on the first Saturday of June, Movie Under the Stars in mid-August, the Sheep Leaving Parade on Labour Day and the holiday season Lights Up! event on in November. New to the City is the Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championship in July at the Dow Centennial Centre.

Outdoors

Enjoy the outdoors with a picnic at Turner Park or Legacy Park, rent a stall at the Lions Campground, play at the Kin Family Spray Park, or catch a fish at the Lion’s Community Fish Pond at West River’s Edge. There are more than 75 km of paved trails that are ideal for walking, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Visitors can also enjoy a skateboard park and the local golf courses.
