Thinking about escaping the city and soaking up some nature this long weekend? Elk Island National Park is a beautiful and popular destination… which means you must plan ahead and know what to expect!
Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a full weekend adventure, a little preparation goes a long way in making your visit smooth, safe, and unforgettable. From packing the essentials and avoiding peak-time crowds, to having fun while protecting the park’s fragile ecosystems, here’s what you need to know before leaving home:
1. Things to know before you leave:
– Entry is free and camping is 25% off until September 2nd 2025 with the Canada Strong Pass.
– The park is very busy, especially during long weekends. If you decide to visit, plan to be there before 11 am to avoid long lines and full parking lots. The best time to visit is during the week!
– Have a backup plan in case the park is full when you arrive. Some areas nearby that you can enjoy are Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Strathcona Wilderness Centre and Métis Crossing.
– Camping fills up fast – check online for camping availability. If the park is full, consider areas nearby.
– For day trippers and evening adventurers – day use area parking lots are closed from 11 pm to 7 am, plan accordingly
– Alberta weather can be unpredictable. Check the weather and be prepared for all conditions.
– Alcohol and cannabis are prohibited throughout the entire park during long weekends (Friday through-Monday).
– Fire bans are always a possibility and some areas of the park may be closed or restricted, check important bulletins to stay up to date.
– It’s bison rut (mating season). Mature males are more alert, more aggressive, and far more likely to choose “fight” over “flight” as they compete with each other for the attention of females. Keep your distance and be aware of signs of irritation.
2. What to pack:
– A sense of adventure;
– Knowledge of park rules and guidelines;
– Plenty of water, food and snacks (there are no restaurants within the park);
– Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, shade, sun clothes, etc);
– Rain gear (raincoat, extra socks, waterproof footwear, etc);
– Bear spray;
– Leash for your pet(s) that you’ll make sure to use;
– Binoculars;
– Bug spray;

3. The 10 golden visitor rules:
1. Know your limits so you can make safe choices.
2. Dispose of garbage properly in designated, bear proof bins.
3. Never feed wildlife and enjoy them from a distance of at least 100m away.
4. Keep your pet on a leash and under physical control at all times, it’s the law.
5. Give wildlife the space they need and deserve – this protects you and them.
6. Avoid excessive noise in campgrounds.
7. Use designated paths and marked trails.
8. Take nothing but photos, do not collect anything to keep as souvenirs. If you’re looking for
more than photos, check out the Visitor Information Centre for souvenirs you can ACTUALLY take home!
9. Respect speed limits and drive with caution, slowing down saves lives (for you and wildlife).
10. Stay out of restricted areas.
Bonus Tips: Know and practice wildlife safety, be bear aware and bison wise. And don’t be afraid to chat with the park staff, they are always happy to answer questions!
