As the last leaves fall and a light skiff of snow dusts the ground, Elk Island National Park offers a tranquil escape just outside the city. From crisp-air hikes to relaxing picnics, fall is the perfect time to explore the park—without the summer crowds.
Here are a few ways to enjoy fall at Elk Island:
1. Hike Over 80 km of Scenic Trails
Wander through quiet forests along Elk Island’s diverse trail network.
- Check current trail conditions before heading out. Dress in layers, prepare for variable weather, and be mindful of earlier sunsets.
- For trip planning support, contact the Visitor Centre open Wednesdays through Sundays between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 780-922-5790 or pn*********************@***gc.ca.
- Pets must remain on leash and under physical control at all times. Dogs are not permitted on the southern leg of the Tawayik Lake Trail to minimize wildlife disturbance.
- Stay aware and know how to respond if you encounter wildlife.
2. Savor a Fall Picnic
Enjoy a quiet meal amid a peaceful landscape at one of the park’s many picnic sites.
- Plan ahead by reviewing picnic area amenities on the Elk Island website.
- Always store food, scented items, and garbage securely when not in use. Feeding or approaching wildlife is prohibited to protect both people and animals.
3. Capture the Season’s Subtle Beauty
The soft contrast of snow-dusted grasslands and still lakes creates a serene backdrop for photography.
- Respect the natural environment: harvesting plants, mushrooms, or other natural items is not permitted in national parks. Take only photos—leave only footprints.
4. Watch for Wildlife on the Move
Fall is a busy time for wildlife at Elk Island.
- Spot bison at the Bison Loop or observe migrating birds along the Living Waters Boardwalk.
- Keep a safe distance: give all wildlife at least 100 metres of space. During rutting (mating) season, bison may behave unpredictably. Never exit your vehicle near bison.
- Bears require special road etiquette. If you see a bear along the roadside, do not stop. You may slow down but keep moving.
- Respect posted signs such as speed limits. Animals can dart out in front of vehicles with little warning.
Plan Ahead. Stay Safe. AdventureSmart.
