The Nature Conservancy of Canada: Protecting Nature for the Future
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the country’s leading national organization dedicated to land conservation. As a private, non-profit group, NCC collaborates with individuals, corporations, foundations, Indigenous communities, and all levels of government to protect Canada’s most important natural areas. They conserve land through donations, purchases, and conservation agreements, and they manage these areas over the long term to support biodiversity and maintain healthy ecosystems.
Since 1962, NCC and its partners have protected over 15 million hectares across the country.
One of NCC’s key priorities is the Beaver Hills Biosphere, located just east of Edmonton. This ecologically rich area includes Elk Island National Park and Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, both recognized by UNESCO for their global importance. Home to bison, moose, and more than 150 species of birds, Beaver Hills is a vital refuge for wildlife.
However, this region is facing increasing pressure from development and habitat loss.
To protect this unique landscape, NCC is taking action by:
- Conserving and securing ecologically significant land
- Restoring degraded habitats
- Creating wildlife corridors
- Collaborating with Indigenous Nations
- Supporting environmental education and sustainable recreation
Through these ongoing efforts, NCC is working to keep Beaver Hills wild and thriving for nature and for generations to come.
