Hike Esker Trail at Whitney Lakes Provincial Park, with its numerous rolling hills, providing excellent views along the glacial esker. Camp overnight in an old-growth forest of aspen, poplar, and spruce at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Cast your line off the dock at Cold Lake Provincial Park and start to create a fish tale to lure in everyone. Stretch your wings at our interpretive programs as you learn about the flora and fauna within the boreal forest ecosystem. LAKELAND PROV. PARK – includes campsites at Dabbs Lake, Helena Lake, Blackett Lake, Jackson Lake, Kinnard Island. Lakeland Canoe Circuit– 38 rustic backcountry campsites located throughout the hiking, biking Trails and Canoe network of lakes in Lakeland Prov. Park. LAKELAND PROV. REC. AREA – Open: May – Oct. 282 sites. 4 different campgrounds; Pinehurst Lake – 126 sites, Touchwood Lake – 93 sites, Seibert Lake – 43 sites, Ironwood – 20 sites, dump station, firewood. Services: (N). Spencer Lake – 3 campgrounds. Recreation: In the PRA there is ATV/OHV/snowmobile trails designated, but no OHV use permitted in campgrounds. Beach, boat launch, fishing, hiking, swimming. COOKING LAKE-BLACKFOOT PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA
If you’re more interested in an adventure-packed day trip, try Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area. This massive landbase runs along the southern boundary of Elk Island National Park and offers free access to 170 km of back-country trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and interpretive programs. Home of the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival, the site offers some of the best cross-country skiing in Alberta. Come for the day with a picnic basket, a pair of binoculars in hand, and a spirit for nature exploration any day of the year.
