This week, from August 12th to 18th, head out to your local markets, restaurants, and farms during Alberta Local Food Week! Farmers’ Markets are happening all summer around Alberta and are perfect to stock up on fresh foods. Don’t forget to stop by farm tours, breweries and distilleries, ending your day with a delicious meal with fresh ingredients at local restaurants.

Alberta Local Food Week is a great opportunity to enjoy some delicious local food:

Shop at a Farmers’ Market this Week!

This summer, over 10 local markets are available around the region for you to find delicious, locally sourced produce, meats, and more.

What better time to see what our province’s agricultural community has to offer? At the beginning of the week, head to the Ardrossan Farmers’ Market held every Tuesday from 4:30 to 7:30 PM and featuring many vendors for produce, meats, treats, and more! Visit the Sherwood Park Farmer’s Market every Wednesday from 3:00pm – 7:00pm year-round to shop for the best local produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, crafts, art, and more. With more than 85 vendors, as well as a lineup of talented buskers, they offer something for everyone. Outdoors: 3000 Emerald Dr. (the Canadian Tire parking lot). Indoors: 401 Festival Lane (Community Centre across from the Library).

On Thursdays, stop by the Boyle Farmers’ Market from 12-3 PM for a variety of food goods and crafts. From 3:30 to 6:30 PM, you can head to Cold Lake to check out one of the biggest markets in the area! Finally, head to Vegreville from 5-8 PM for the Pysanka Park Market where you can find a selection of vendors including Taber corn, fresh lemonade, tasty baked goods.

Start your weekend with a visit to Lac La Biche Farmers’ Market, open every Friday from 3-5 PM. With dozens of vendors to shop, you’re sure to find fresh ingredients, the perfect gift, and a variety of treats to take home!

Saturday is the perfect day to go market hopping! From 10 AM to noon, head to Smoky Lake for baking, traditional Ukrainian food, fresh farm eggs, produce, and more. Camrose Saturday Farmers’ Market runs weekly from 10 AM to 1 PM with over twenty vendors. Don’t forget to stop by Bonnyville from 11 AM to 2 PM for many options including fresh veggies, potatoes, baking, and crafts.

Finally, end your day at Andrew Farmers’ Market, now open from 1-3 PM with a great selection of quality products.

Christy Creek Honey is a small apiary (bee farm) that specializes in small batch honey, their signature Bee Sweet Stir Stick Lollipops, and personalized, educational hive tours. The log home, yard, and bee boutique were built by 2 generations of Wicker’s, and are being improved by the 3rd generation. Rob and Joanne, your hosts, are both educators and enjoy traveling. Métis Crossing is excited to participate in Open Farm Days by offering FREE general admission during this special event.

Visitors can enjoy our daily experiences, which include seasonal activities, historical exhibits, art installations, and daily Métis spotlights, reflecting Métis life on the land.

During the Open Farm Days, in addition to our usual offerings, we will be hosting a special meat smoking demonstration and guided tours of our indoor vertical garden. This unique garden grows microgreens and fresh greens, showcasing sustainable agricultural practices that fit perfectly with the event’s theme.

We will be having a number of activities that illustrate farming in the early days on the Alberta prairie.

Activities:

petting zoo, cream separating demonstrations, churning ice cream once the cream is separated, making butter demonstrations and the ever popular hay ride for kids of all ages.

Come visit this popular agri-tourism farm, just 20 min north of Edmonton, for:

free entry to the kid’s 10 minute corn and sunflower mazes; join a free farm tour; join a free grow-your-own Fruit Tree Workshop for Beginners at 10am, 2pm or 4pm.

First established in 1956, this award-winning 70 year-old farm has lots of nooks and crannies to explore! There are antique apple trees and newly planted farm orchards with apples, cherries, plums, rhubarb, raspberries, apricots, currants, and haskaps to investigate. You can purchase fruit trees and berry plants to take home.  There is a petting farm for goat “schnuggles”, a corn and a sunflower maze for kids,  a Country Store to shop for goodies in.

Come back through the summer on Saturdays for Elder Bill’s Ways of the Land workshops, or in the fall to experience our Sunflower Fest on the Sept long weekend, and our 38th Annual Falloween & Haunted Pumpkin Festivals in September and October (weekends).

Our family operates a closed Hereford cow herd calving annually. Located approx. 60 miles north of Edmonton just off of the Ft. McMurray highway, we are part of the lush semi-wooded Parkland Region which surrounds our farm. Our pastures and hay lands are pesticide and herbicide free. The beef animals we raise from birth are hormone and anti-biotic free. We also practice responsible farm animal care and follow humane livestock management and handling techniques.

  • We will be offering farm tours of our farm as well as set up for retailing of our farm products.
  • Our farm is a mixed farm , tours will include our cattle livestock tour as well as a tour of what we grow…grain, forage crops, and vegetable crops.

A family business, Barr Estate has built a reputation for award-inning wine using fruit including raspberries grown by Amy’s grandfather. Her family homesteaded in the County of Strathcona many years ago. Her grandfather started growing raspberries on the farm and years later Amy’s mom was able to nurture a few of those heritage plants into thousands that they use today when making their wine. The rhubarb was on the farm and they also received a great many plants from friends and family. So many varieties which makes the wine so flavourful. Farm tours are free and last about 30 minutes. We take a walk through the farm, learn about soil health, beneficial insects and plants, solarization, crop rotation, and much more.

Sturgeon Moon Dinner

Begin the evening with a tour of our family flower farm, and then dine in the field amongst the flowers. Dinners will showcase seasonal produce from our farm, and neighboring farms, with the meal being prepared before you by professional Chefs. Round out the night with sweets in the garden where you might be able to catch a glimpse of the full moon and stars. The August Full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon – The sturgeon moon got its name from the large number of sturgeon fish found in the great lakes in eastern Canada. This dinner will feature locally sourced fish with additional menu items curated to reflect the best of what is in season.

We provide a variety of psychological services, an online academy for certifying professionals in Animal Assisted Services, as well as for screening, training, and certifying therapy dogs, and we offer Tourism experiences that include our Time on the Land Program, goat yoga, a magical forest, guided animal tours, and more!

Interactive Animal Stations: Drop by our animal stations to meet our critters and learn all about their stories, behaviors, and how they help people in therapy!

Tractor Hayride Tours: Hop aboard for a bumpy but fun hay ride through our back 40 pastures to get a full land view of our gorgeous 40-acre lot!

Nature Yoga: On top of the hill you will get a beautiful view of the animals and the event below while being led through a series of relaxing yoga poses by our certified yoga instructor.

Magical Forest Trails: Take a walk through our magical forest, see how many gnomes and fairies you can spot, or bring a picnic to enjoy with your family!

Craft Station: Scavenge for your craft materials in our magical forest and create your very own nature-inspired craft to take home with you!

Know Before You Go!

Admissions to the event is FREE, however, there may items or experiences that are available to purchase. We prefer cash, but we do have a square reader on-site that relies on wi-fi and can be finicky, otherwise we also accept e-transfer.

For courtesy, we ask that guests do not enter no-go zones such as the house up at the top of the driveway, inside the office (unless guided by staff/volunteer), in animal pens (without a staff/volunteer present), or cross the lines marked in the magical forest.

Take a trip through Strathcona County with a purpose. Stop at designated driveways that will be hosting local vendors. From Vegetables and beef to crafts and artisans. Think of it as a farmers market style opportunity that instead of walking from one booth to the next you hop in your car and travel through the beautiful countryside making an occasional stop to purchase from and meet local vendors. Pick up a passport at your first stop and collect stamps at each stop to enter for great prizes.

Start your trip at 22177 Wye Road Ardrossan. This is the first stop of nine in the area. This is also the stop where you can register for your Roadside Stand Passport. Have your passport stamped at a minimum of four Roadside Stand stops to be eligible for some great prizes.

Here you will be introduced to the Ardrossan Recreation and Agricultural Society’s Greenhouse Project. This community project is designed to address food sustainability. Come visit their farm, and view how small family farms used to be run. Lots of old school practices, and a wide variety of animals, all raised right to plate. Their farm was established in the late 1800s, and still has a lot of the original buildings and machinery.

 Old Station Honey & Mead – New Serepta

Old Station Honey & Mead is situated in the Hamlet of New Sarepta, right off Hwy 21.  They’re the closest meadery to the City of Edmonton, and very easy to get to.  Their mead-maker is a local honey producer who for years dreamed of making the “world’s oldest fermented adult beverage” new again. Their mead is made from only locally-sourced honey and fruit, creating a truly local business and bringing something new to the tiny hamlet of New Sarepta.

Their meads are crafted from exclusively multi-floral honey, which is very mild and adopts flavours very well.  They have a range of meads, both still and sparkling, made from local berries and herbs.

Round Hill Renaissance Agriculture Foundation – Camrose County

The community is creating this amazing space to provide opportunities to educate people about growing their own food, edible landscapes, all done using principles of permaculture. They have purple martins living in their purple martin house. A unique composting toilet on site.

Explore Farm to Fork by Train August 17 @ 12:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Travel by train to meet your rural neighbours on this unique Open Farm Days event.  Explore small town farm life as it should be –by train!  We will stop along the tracks to visit with  local farmers, out in their fields, and learn about  the crops they raise and the methods they use to provide food for your table.  As we roll down the tracks, discover small town farm life, learn about crops grown in the area, and about the local wildlife, birds and flora from our expert guest on board!  Enjoy locally grown snacks & beverages in the open-air gondola car.  

When we arrive in the village of Forestburg, we encourage you to take some time to stroll through the village. Enjoy a tour of our locally owned Heritage grain elevator where you can see a historic grain wagon on display, or dive into history at the Forestburg Museum, or stop by the Many Horses Saloon for a cold drink, be sure to ask about their train themed cocktails.  Cap off your Farm to Fork Excursion with a long table meal of locally sourced menu at The Station in Forestburg.   (Ticket includes  round trip train ride, snacks & dinner)

Depart Kelsey 12:30 pm, arrive in Forestburg by 4:00 pm (train stops along way for field talk and walk)

Locally sourced dinner at the Station in Forestburg at 5:30 pm

Depart Forestburg for Kelsey at 6:30 pm to arrive in Kelsey at  8:00 pm
