Getting to Lac La Biche

Lac La Biche is located about 215 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta off Highway 55. Or, if you’re traveling westbound, it’s 150 kilometres west of Cold Lake and Highway 55.

Lac La Biche describes the lake, the town and the region as a whole. The Lac La Biche/Lakeland region encompasses other small communities, including Plamondon and Owl River.

Lac La Biche Lake

Named after the French word for ‘doe’, this 234 km² lake is not to be missed. It has it a lot to offer with excellent beaches, forested parks, and shoreland areas. Perfect for fishing, boating, kayaking, and so much more. You’ll find a variety of fish including Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Perch, Whitefish and Burbot.

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park is a beautiful slice of paradise as it curves out from the lake into a peninsula shape. It’s a great camping spot, with 72 campsites suited for RV’s and tents. You’ll also find group camping, picnic tables, showers, electricity, playgrounds, an amphitheatre, and other amenities. It’s a great spot to see wildlife – at least 224 of the approximate 330 Alberta bird species have been observed here. Also check out Pelican Point, which is a good place to see pelicans hanging out in the lake. The night skies rank a 3-4 on the Bortle Scale, a.k.a. pristine conditions to see stars!

Golf

Play a round at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club. Situated on the shores of Lac La Biche Lake, this is one of the most scenic golf courses in Alberta. This first class golfing experience is just slightly over 2 hours drive from the city of Edmonton.  The course is a beautiful 18 hole par 72 golf course and is open to the public!  There is a driving range available as well.  Be sure to stop in at the clubhouse for a delicious meal.

ATV

Take a break from the water and get out on 4 wheels. You can take all-day ATV tours and venture through untouched forest within the beautiful Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area. Whether you’ve been on a quad or have yet to experience one, an ATV is an unique adventure itself as you travel into the beautiful boreal forest. Highlights include the Dabbs Lake Trail, the Wishbone Trails and the Puller Lake Trails, which all showcase the best of this spectacular ATV destination.

Trails

Start your trail adventure right in town, the lakefront trail stretches over 10 km from downtown all the way to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.

Neighbouring Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area, Lakeland Provincial Park is a great place to enjoy the area’s natural beauty. Take in the boreal forest and the clear blue lakes as you traverse the 45 km of trails with ranges from 1 km to 11 km trails to explore.

Hideaway Adventure Grounds

Hideaway Adventure Grounds is a great option if you’re after an unique camping experience. Located just 40 minutes south of Lac La Biche, they offer traditional back-to-the-basics, self-contained camping. Don’t expect to find power, or wifi here! But they make up for it with incredible stargazing and peaceful forest sounds. Whether you’re looking to spend a quiet night or two or are wanting an experience into learning more about Métis People and survival skills, you must visit this hidden gem.

Museum of Aboriginal Peoples’ Art and Artifacts

See beautiful Indigenous fine art and learn more about the Group of 7, seven world-famous Indigenous artists. Located within Portage College, the Museum of Aboriginal Peoples’ Art & Artifacts is free to visit. Guided tours can be arranged in advanced or you can check out the exhibits yourself. Check their website for hours.

Lac La Biche Museum & Visitor Information Centre

If you’re visiting Lac La Biche for the first (or even 10th!) time, make your way to the Lac La Biche Museum and conjoining Visitor Information Centre to get acquainted. Why? It’s the best opportunity to learn of what you can see in the area and receive a lesson in the area’s history.

Lac La Biche Mission Historical Society

If you’re intrigued by the region’s history, pay a visit to the Lac La Biche Mission Historical Society, one of the oldest communities in Alberta. Established in 1853, this 45-acre site includes several restored historical buildings and an interpretive centre. Notably, it was one of the first Albertan sites for exchanges between the Indigenous, Metis, Francophone and Anglophone populations.

Plamondon & District Museum

Founded by French pioneers, it’s the best source to learn all about migration to the region.

Mini Parc Heritage Park

Pay a visit to Mini Parc Heritage Park, Plamondon’s . Created by the granddaughter of the town’s actual founder (Joseph Plamondon), you’ll walk amongst recreated miniature replica buildings of the original town. Notable replicas include the old church, old homes, the main store, school, a traditional trappers cabin, and plenty others. Everything on site has been built by volunteers, often the grandchildren of those who owned the original buildings.

Major Events in 2024

  • Lac La Biche Farmers Market  For unique gifts and homemade items, the Lac La Biche Farmers’ Market held every Friday afternoon is an ideal stop.
  • Lac La Biche Summer Days – Summer is in full swing this long weekend! Come celebrate with four days of fun.
  • Kikino Rodeo –  This annual event is back! On August 16 – 18, the rodeo celebrations days are not to be missed. Events like chuckwagon races and pony chariot races are sure to delight, alongside other staples like the horseshoe tournament, pancake breakfast and off site parade.

With a sports pub theme, the food at LaBone’s is on point. Delicious steak and other pub food from the varied menu will get your mouth watering – and it’s worth it!

The Cafe on Main

If you’re looking for coffee, bubble tea, an incredible array of sweet desserts, or some delicious Lebanese cuisine, this is the place to go. You’d never think of it as a hotspot for Lebanese food, but we had quite the feasts on Kibbeh, Hummus, Tabbouleh, and Fattoush. We also had a mocha, a mocha bubble tea, and tried a few of their desserts. Needless to say, we were stuffed. 

Fat Unicorn Brewery and Tap and Grill

Not only is this the only brewery in the region, but they also serve up a tasty menu, including things like Poutine, burgers, and boneless chicken wings, but also some unique options like Siberian Dumplings! Wash it down with some of their own beers such as the Dirty Blonde, Naughty Amber, and Cossack Imperial

Beaverhill Shell

Beaverhill Shell is a new take on a gas station convenience store. Family owned and operated; they are proud to offer hot, fresh food. Their store features an Italian fire stone pizza oven, where they cook flatbread styled pizzas, alongside many other dishes.In 2019, Beaverhill Shell won Canada’s Best Washroom!  The washrooms at Beaverhill Shell were designed with the comforts of its customers in mind. Unlike conventional rest-stops, they feature luxurious details throughout.
