Within One Hour from Edmonton

Town of Tofield

Tofield is located just forty minutes southeast of Edmonton on Hwy 14. Start your visit at the Beaverhill Lake Nature Centre and Museum facility. The facility is home to numerous interactive displays on the rich natural and cultural history of the area. Head outdoors to enjoy the spray park, play a round of golf, or enjoy a picnic at one of the many parks and playgrounds. Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars! Beaverhill Lake area is one of the few federally recognized bird sanctuaries in Canada. There is plenty of camping available in the area, including Tofield Campground, Black Nugget Lake Park, Coal Creek Golf Resort and BlueBird RV Park. Spend some time in town shopping at Busy B Bargains where you just might find your “next to new” treasure. Get your quilting supplies at Quilting Country. Shop for camping supplies at Tru Hardware, which will also have your sticker to put on your gameboard. Uncle Roger’s offers family dining, as well as a sports lounge.

Beaver County

Head down Hwy 14 and take some time to explore Beaver County.  Coal Creek Golf Resort is an 18-hole course just across from Black Nugget Lake Campground.  The lake was developed out of a former coal mine.  Stretch your legs and enjoy the spacious treed sites or take in a scenic hike on one of the trails.  Camp Lake Park near Viking is the perfect place to enjoy water-skiing and spend the afternoon swimming or relaxing at one of the lakes two beaches.

Village of Ryley

Continuing southeast on Hwy 14 for fifteen minutes will bring you to the Village of Ryley, home to one of Canada’s 150 Mosaic Murals. The mural creates a perfect photo opportunity for the Go East of Edmonton photo contest. Be sure to use #goroadtrips2021 and #goeastofedmonton to be entered to win monthly and bonus prizes. Taste the famous Ryley sausage while you are in town. Or visit the working museum of George’s Harness and Saddlery. Tour the Ryley & District Museum, housed in two old country schools joined together. Enjoy recreation with the family at the indoor swimming pool, complete with climbing wall and hot tub. Or head over to the Ryley Sports Grounds where you will find the skating/BMX park, pickleball courts, and ball diamonds.

Village of Hay Lakes

Head southeast of Edmonton on Hwy 21 thirty minutes to the Village of Hay Lakes, where you will find attractions, shopping and outdoor activities. Hay Lakes offers quality family living for all ages, with businesses, school, senior’s activities and recreation facilities. Camp at the jewel of the community – Telegraph Park & Campground, located on the village boundary. This pristine 80-acre park has wonderful walking trails, a stocked fishing pond, and 25 camping sites.

City of Camrose

The City of Camrose is located just thirty minutes from Hay Lakes, or an hour southeast of Edmonton. Explore downtown Camrose while you eat, drink and shop. Twig Boutique is your stop for unique clothing and giftware. Kaoz Kidz has everything you need for the little ones in your family. Looking for something to soothe your mind and body? Visit Lakehouse Naturals Soap Company and choose from handcrafted bars, bath bombs, salts, essential oils and more. Head out of town for short ten minute drive to Buckskins Emporium for another unique shopping experience. Getting hungry? The Lefse House is an authentic Scandinavian bakery and coffee shop – if you stop in on a Friday – you must try their cinnamon buns! Fiona’s Coffee & Gifts also offers coffee, desserts, as well as healthy, delicious meals. Fill your cooler at Lazuli Farms, an on-farm store providing farm-raised meats, local food and artisanal goods. Spend some time outdoors at Mirror Lake Park and enjoy 38 km of walking trails that wind through Stoney Creek Valley. Bring your canoe or kayak and paddle through Mirror Lake, Valleyview Pond, Duggan Pond, and Cascades Pond. Play a round at the Camrose Golf Course and if the weather is not in your favour, head over to the Club House Virtual Golf and stay out of the elements. If your shopping or outdoor adventure makes you thirsty, you are in luck. Did you know that Camrose is home to five brewing and distillery companies? Take your pick or try all of them! Camrose RV Park will make you a happy camper. And if you didn’t bring a tent or RV, you can rest your head at one of Camrose’s top rated hotels.

Camrose County

Continue to discover the Camrose area, well known for its agriculture. Take in the views of the countryside, rolling hills, scenic views and dancing grain fields. Don’t forget to post your photos on social media with our hashtags for your chance to win monthly prizes. Be sure to bring your clubs because Camrose County has an excellent selection of golf courses from 9 to 27 holes, all within half an hour drive of each other. Play a round of 18 holes at Miquelon Hills Golf Course. Double Dam Golf Course and Campground offers more than golf and camping. They provide fun family activities all summer long. Other campgrounds in the area are Silver Creek Golf & RV Resort, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, Tillicum Park, and Pelican Point Park. Camrose County is proud to have an abundance of local food producers. Town of Daysland

Just half an hour east of Camrose is the community of Daysland. The Town of Daysland is home to the historic Palace Theatre, built in 1952 and located on main street. Visit the DaysArt website to view the schedule of live performances.  For the outdoor enthusiast, experience beauty through the 3.5 km Crocus Trail. Look for the purple Crocus Trail flags around town to gain access to this hidden gem. Stay at the Edgerton Day Campground or stay and play at the Daysland Golf Course Campground. Looking for a unique gift, home décor or flowers? Be sure to stop and shop at the Rusty Daisy Gift Co. and the Lady Bug Pick Nic Ltd. If you are visiting on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, Rusty Daisy will also have fresh baking to tempt your tastebuds!

Village of Forestburg

Head south of Daysland to the Village of Forestburg, rich in agriculture and history. There are plenty of opportunities to step back in time. Visit the Forestburg Museum, a 1927 Masonic Temple. South of town, you will find the Diplomat Mine Interpretive Site – Canada’s only surface coal mining museum, home to one of the largest mobile mining land machines made from riveted construction in 1927. Immerse yourself in a historic experience through a Battle River Train Excursions, brought to you by the Friends of the Battle River Railway. Village of Donalda

West on Hwy 53, 37 km from Forestburg, is Donalda.  Home to the World’s Largest Oil Lamp Replica, Donalda is the northern most point of the Canadian Badlands.  Overlooking the Meeting Creek Coulee, Donalda has iconic landscapes.  Explore nature on the hiking trail that takes you along the coulee rim and down Willow Canyon.

Town of Killam

Back on Hwy 13, Killam is approximately 1.5 hours from Edmonton. This thriving community has plenty to offer both residents and visitors. In addition to hosting events and activities, Killam Agriplex features an indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, fitness room and concession. Watch for updates on the town website on the 50th Annual Killam Rodeo planning to take place this summer. Centennial Park and Heritage Park offer playgrounds, sport areas, ball diamonds, horseshoe pits, as well as a bike and skateboard park. You will also love the 2.5 km of paved trails that wind through town. Shop at Budding Ideas Flowers & Gifts for flowers, gifts or unique home décor. Guardian Drugs also offers plenty of shopping in their 11,000 square foot store. Stay at the Wagon Wheel Motel or camp at Heritage Park.

Town of Sedgewick

A short ten minute jaunt down Hwy 13 will bring you to the Town of Sedgewick. This dynamic community offers many services and activities. Visit the Sedgewick Archives and Museum – a provincial historic site, built in 1906 as a former merchant bank. Sedgewick Lake Park is a popular camping, picnicking, and bird-watching destination with 59 well-manicured sites, new camping cabins, an outdoor wading pool and a spray park. Walk over to the Sedgewick Golf Course for a quick round. Then treat yourself to lunch and something sweet at the Wooden Spoon Café and Cakeshop.

Town of Hardisty

Hardisty is located approximately twenty five minutes southeast of Sedgewick. Hardisty’s slogan is “More Than You Imagine”, which is fitting considering the beautiful scenery that provides a backdrop for plenty of outdoor activities and fun events. Hardisty is also known as a major part of Alberta’s Energy Hub, and is the home of the Tank Farm – a robust industrial development. The Hardisty Rodeo Association hosts an annual rodeo that is one of the best in the area. Be sure to check the Town’s website for event updates and details. The campground and public beach at the Hardisty Lake Park are right in town, welcoming campers and day visitors all summer long. Nearby, you can play 9 holes of golf at the Lakeview Golf Course – one of the town’s best kept secrets and it’s the Roadtrip Adventure Game sticker station!

Town of Viking

If you continue along Hwy 14, the Town of Viking is located half an hour from Ryley. Viking may be best known as the home of the Sutter brothers. Six Sutter brothers played in the NHL at the same time, often as team captains. The Viking Museum offers a look back in time as a village of restored buildings including a one-room schoolhouse, log store, church, farmhouse and hospital. Check out the large collection of tools, implements and vintage International tractors. While you are at the museum, pick up a map and experience Viking’s civic pride and your tour the streets and gardens. Take time for a round of golf at Viking Golf & Country Club. Extend your stay at the Eastview Park Campground or Camp Lake Park and enjoy the beach and playground. Viking is home to many unique shops and stores, so allow yourself some time to browse. Viking Meats is a full service meat shop and deli counter, best known for their famous Viking Wieners. If you are looking for something for your home or a one-of-a-kind gift, visit Java Blossom Flowers Ltd. and enjoy a coffee while you shop.

Two + Hours from Edmonton

Village of Irma

As you drive down Hwy 14, stop in the Village of Irma.  Visit the Irma Museum, a tiny Anglican church and a building that carries an impressive collection of over 400 antique lamps.  Go antique shopping while you’re exploring at Like It Never Was or find some unique gifts at Long Branch Trading Company, where you can also enjoy lunch and the best coffee in town!  Make sure to give yourself time to browse the impressive collection at Irma Home & Garden Décor.

Town of Wainwright

Follow Hwy 14 for twenty minutes to Wainwright, the town with a historic feel and a wide variety of boutiques and restaurants. Eat, shop and explore throughout the town and beyond. Historic downtown offers a collection of beautifully restored heritage buildings, which are filled with eateries featuring cuisine from around the globe. You are sure to find something that everyone likes! In addition to big box retailers, Wainwright has a vibrant collection of unique shops and boutiques. Gibson’s Home Hardware has everything from camping supplies to fishing and hunting licenses. Gear up before you head out to explore! Photo opportunities await at Canada’s largest Buffalo Statue. Stop by the Bud Cotton Buffalo Paddock and see the live bison herd at the gates to CFB Wainwright. Make tracks to the Battle River Train Trestle, the second largest train trestle in Canada. Prairie history comes alive at the Wainwright Museum, located in the original CNR train station. If you are looking for something to keep you active, look no further than the Peace Memorial Multiplex with an indoor running track and climbing wall. The adjacent Communiplex houses an indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, weight room, squash and racquetball courts, as well as a performing arts theatre. When you are ready to get outside, visit Rotary Splash Park or visit the many parks and playgrounds Wainwright has to offer. Opportunities for fishing and water sports are abundant in and around the town. Too much to do in a day? Lots of camping is available or stay at a bed and breakfast, motel or hotel.
